Harajuku: Mademoiselle Yulia makes fashionable impact

Mademoiselle Yulia is currently the center of attention of Tokyo’s fashionable Harajuku district.

Credit: Yomiuri Shimbun “School girl” was the 28-year-old DJ’s fashion theme on the day she was interviewed. She was dressed in a bright blue blouse by Olympia Le-Tan and a short skirt, with a Chanel ribbon in her hair, white socks and hot pink high heels.

“No matter how coldly people look at me, I’m determined to wear what I really like because clothes are a means of expressing myself,” Yulia said. Her fashion style — freely combining high-end and secondhand clothes, as well as pairing loud patterns or vivid colors with other equally bold items — is reputed to be a “typical fashion style for Tokyo.”

Spotlight

Yulia first came under the spotlight in 2008 when she released her debut CD as a disc jockey. She gained a reputation for her sophisticated dress sense and became known overseas, too, through such platforms as the photo-sharing social media tool Instagram.

Sitting in the front row at the fashion shows of famous brands, she exhibits a strong presence among the international celebrities. Yulia has also been interviewed by The New York Times.
