Okinawan Crafting: Bingata Coral Dyeing

Okinawa is the southernmost prefecture of Japan. Naha is the capital which is located in south Okinawa Island. This island is massively composed of corals. Coral reefs found in this region provide an environment for a diverse marine fauna.

Okinawa is prominent in crafting. Bingata is their forte, an Okinawan traditional resist dyed cloth. It is a dyeing method by the use of coral. This art uses bright colors and assorted patterns and designs portraying various subjects such as flowers, fish and abstracts. It is also worn during Ryukyu reenactments and performances.
