The advancing age of the Japanese population makes orthopedics a strong ally in knee surgery. The new robot assists in the process of implanting artificial knees where it is necessary to saw the bones. The main advantage would be in gaining accuracy, reducing the patient’s recovery time.
The robotic arm / surgical support system is called “Mako” and it is believed that it will soon be available in hospitals in Japan because the system has been approved by the Japanese Ministry of Health. As a result, surgeries now have insurance system coverage, lowering the cost significantly.
Dr. Hitoshi Shigenuma, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Kobe Kaisei Hospital, said: “We believe that by increasing the number of artificial joints from now on, we can contribute to the QoL of more patients.”
