9-year-old drops game, but earns praise from Taiwan Go Queen

Japan – Go prodigy Sumire Nakamura held her head high even after handing Taiwan’s top female player a come-from-behind victory in a special match on Feb. 20.
“I was able to play well,” the 9-year-old said after the game against 24-year-old Hei Jia-jia, who in addition to her go exploits has shined on the catwalk as a top fashion model.
The match was held at the headquarters of the Nihon Ki-in, Japan’s governing body for the board game, in Tokyo’s Ichigaya district.
Although the elementary school pupil from Osaka gained an edge at one point, the 7-dan opponent clinched victory after 228 moves under the “chuoshi” rule, when both players have passed play because the outcome is clear.
