The Japanese government is considering annual benefits of around 5,000 yen for low-income workers through a proposed income-linked program.
Under the plan, workers earning 1.19 million yen or less a year would receive a fixed amount. The benefit is expected to rise gradually as annual income approaches 1.6 million yen, then decrease after income passes a certain level.
The proposal was presented to a committee of the House of Representatives. Lawmakers are also discussing bills to cut the consumption tax on food from 8% to 1% for two years, starting next April.
The government plans to provide 600 billion yen in benefits each year, equivalent to 1% of the consumption tax.
