As Of January 4, 2022: Japan Reports 1,151 New Infections; 225 in Okinawa, 151 in Tokyo

Japan on Tuesday reported 1,151 new coronavirus cases, the highest number since Oct 6. Okinawa Prefecture had the highest number with 225, excluding cases reported on U.S. military bases.

The Tokyo metropolitan government reported 151 new coronavirus cases, up 48 from Monday and 105 more than last Monday.

The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is two, one more than Monday, health officials said. The nationwide figure is 54, up to two from Sunday.

After Okinawa and Tokyo, the prefectures with the most cases were Osaka(124), Hiroshima (109), Yamaguchi (79, of which 62 were in Iwakuni), Kanagawa (55), Saitama (38), Chiba (34), Aichi (34), Tochigi (33), Hyogo (26) and Hokkaido (26).

One coronavirus-related death was reported nationwide.
