The number of daily cases of the coronavirus in Tokyo has fallen under 100 for the first time this year.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirmed 87 new cases on Monday. The figure is down 67 from a week ago.
The daily tally last dropped under 100 on November 2, 2020 — about 11 months ago.
Tokyo officials also say six people infected with the virus died on Monday, bringing a total number of deaths in the capital to 2,960.
Seventy-seven people were seriously ill as of Monday, down 11 from the previous day.
The seven-day average through Monday is 196.7. That’s 57.6 percent of the average of the previous seven-day period.
The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo was 77, 11 down from Sunday, health officials said. The nationwide figure was 693, down three from Sunday.
Nationwide, the number of reported cases was 602. Osaka had the most cases with 96, followed by Tokyo, Kanagawa (51), Saitama (43), Chiba (43), Hyogo (26), and Aichi (22). Hokkaido reported five cases, the first time in a year that the daily figure has been below 10.
