Canada responds to President Duterte’s threats against them

The Embassy of Canada has recently issued an official statement in response to the threats of President Rodrigo Duterte over the waste illegally shipped to the Philippines. KAMI learned that the Canadian government is “strongly committed” to work with the Philippine government to resolve the issue. “A joint technical working group, consisting of officials from both countries, is examining the full spectrum of issues related to the removal of the waste with a view to a timely resolution,” it read in the statement, as posted by ABS-CBN News. The embassy also mentioned that this 2019, the Philippines and Canada are celebrating its 70th year of diplomatic relations. In addition, they noted that both countries are looking forward to strengthening political, economic, and cultural ties.  During the visit of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Manila, he cited “legal barriers” as to why they were not able to get back their waste yet. However, he said that they were already looking into the matter. As previously reported by KAMI, President Rodrigo called out Canada for the trash they dumped in the Philippines from 2013 and 2014. The President threatened the Canadian government that he would fight against them if they do not take their garbage back.
