Imee Marcos, a late dictator’s daughter whose bid for a Senate seat this year has met loud opposition, was in the middle of the pack in the latest partial and unofficial results in the 2019 midterm elections on Tuesday.
Based on election results posted at 4:50 a.m., Marcos placed eighth with 15,140,750 votes, just behind Lito Lapid but ahead of Koko Pimentel.
Only 12 seats are available in the Senate race.
Rights groups pointing to the alleged atrocities committed during the regime of his father, President Ferdinand Marcos, have fervently campaigned not to put a Marcos back in the national political scene.
But despite controversies regarding her academic achievements, an apparent disregard toward victims of martial law, and a surname linked to rights violations, Marcos looks on her way to becoming a first-time senator.
