Indonesia’s Mount Marapi Erupts, Japan Monitors Possible Tsunami

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a large-scale eruption occurred yesterday evening local time at Mount Marapi, a volcano on Sumatra Island in Indonesia. The eruption reached an estimated height of approximately 15,000 meters. Images captured by the weather satellite Himawari showed smoke rising from the vicinity of Mount Marapi.

The agency is investigating potential tsunami impacts on Japan but, as of midnight today, there have been no significant observations of changes in sea levels both domestically and internationally. The Japan Meteorological Agency advises continued vigilance for further updates.
