Ishiba plans visit to southeast Asia during extended holiday

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is coordinating a visit to several Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines, during the extended holiday in April. The initiative aims to strengthen ties with nations in the region, particularly in response to China’s growing expansionist activities in the South China Sea.
In addition to the Philippines, the government is considering including neighboring countries such as Vietnam and Thailand in the diplomatic agenda. However, within the Japanese government, there are also suggestions for Ishiba to visit European countries like the United Kingdom, taking into account the war in Ukraine and the G7 summit scheduled for June.
The final decision will be made considering the parliamentary schedule and other official commitments.
