Man arrested for attempting to murder a woman

A 44-year-old man was arrested by police in Tokyo on suspicion of attempted murder after attempting to choke a 23-year-old woman as she was walking home last July.

The incident happened at around 1 a.m. Sankei Shimbun published on July 6 in Katsushika Ward.

Police said Masaaki Kumada, with no fixed occupation, pursued the woman after she left JR Koiwa Station for around 250 meters. Then he came up behind her, placed one of his hands over her eyes, and with his other hand, he began to choke her.

The woman was able to fight back against her assailant and he ran away. The police said that the victim sustained neck injuries that took two weeks to heal.

After an examination of street surveillance camera video, police said Kumada was found. On Friday, he was arrested.

Police said Kumada confessed to the charge and cited him as saying that after losing revenue from his part-time work due to the coronavirus, he had been in a bad mood and that he only wanted to strike someone out. He advised the police that the victim didn’t know him.
