MANILA — Meralco said rotational brownouts could affect some areas on Tuesday after Luzon was placed on the highest alert due to insufficient power reserves.
The brownouts from manual load dropping could last for an hour, Meralco said.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines on Wednesday placed Luzon on red alert, the highest warning, due to “insufficient operating reserves.” It was scheduled from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Yellow alert, the second highest, will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 4 to 5 p.m., and 6 to 9 p.m., the NGCP said.
In case of supply deficiency, corporations and commercial establishments participating in the Interruptible Load Program (ILP) are ready to use their generator sets to help prevent or minimize power outages, said Meralco.
The public can help prevent brownouts by avoiding opening refrigerators unnecessarily, cleaning electric fans and air-conditioning vents, and unplugging unused appliances, the firm said.
Wednesday’s expected peak demand in Luzon is at 10,313 megawatts against available capacity of 10,625 MW and a reserve of 312 MW, according to the NGCP website.
