Nissan will electrolyze new models in main markets
As part of the Japanese automaker’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, on Wednesday, Nissan Motor Co said all its “new vehicle offerings” in key markets will be electrified by the early 2030s.
The company, which aims to cover markets in Japan, China, the United States and Europe, has announced that it will explore battery technologies for electric vehicles (EVs), including solid-state batteries, and further improve its e-POWER hybrid technology to maximize energy efficiency.
Nissan Chief Executive Officer Makoto Uchida said, “We’re determined to help create a carbon-neutral society and accelerate the global effort against climate change,”
As global automakers pivot from diesel cars to electric and hybrid models, Nissan’s plans come as Japan aims to eliminate sales of new gasoline-powered vehicles by the mid-2030s, moving to EVs, including hybrid vehicles and fuel cell vehicles.
Last year, the nation set out a “green growth strategy” that includes a target of replacing new gasoline-powered vehicles with EVs by the mid-2030s to help achieve the carbon-neutral goal of 2050.
Japan, where the country’s energy mix accounted for 18% of renewable energy in the year ended March 2020, is in the process of updating its energy policy.
