Rhodora Alcaras, 28, had just arrived in Hong Kong the previous day when she became trapped inside her new employer’s home during the fire. For several hours while awaiting rescue, she kept the infant safe by wrapping the baby in a wet blanket and holding them close.

Both Alcaras and the baby were taken to the ICU along with the mother and are now reported in stable condition.

The incident highlights the vital, often unrecognized role played by hundreds of thousands of migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong, one of the world’s most expensive cities, who care for children, the elderly, and households with unwavering dedication.

The local community and former employers have widely commended her courageous actions under extreme circumstances.
