RADIOACTIVITY FROM CHINESE POWER PLANT 9 TIMES OF FUKUSHIMA

The amount of tritium, a radioactive substance, contained in wastewater discharged from a Chinese nuclear power plant in 2022 will be up to nine times higher than the maximum amount of water from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant of Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) that is planned to be released annually, according to official Chinese data. The data once again highlights the fact that China, which calls the treated water “nuclear contaminated water” and condemns the release of such water into the ocean, has been discharging a considerable amount of tritium.

Chinese Nuclear Power Plant Exceeds Planned Tritium Release Limit for Treated Water from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant

China has maintained its position that it opposes the discharge into the ocean on the grounds that the treated water contains other radioactive materials, and its arguments are running parallel to those of Japan. It is difficult to resolve the issue through such means as an embargo on Japanese marine products by China.

The official document is the 23rd edition of the China Nuclear Energy Yearbook, which records data on the operation and safety of nuclear power plants in 2010. The amount of tritium contained in wastewater at 15 sites, or more than 70%, exceeded 22 trillion becquerels, the maximum amount of tritium that is planned to be released from Fukushima Daiichi.

The amount of tritium released by the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in Zhejiang Province in 2010 was 202 trillion becquerels, which is 9.1 times the upper limit of water treatment.
