SAKURAJIMA VOLCANO ERUPTION

At around 6:33 p.m. on February 14, an explosive eruption occurred at the summit crater of Mt. Sakurajima. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an ash fall forecast for parts of Kumamoto, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima prefectures. According to Kagoshima Prefecture, no injuries or damage to buildings have been confirmed.

Volcanic ash has not reached 5,000 meters since August 9, 2020, when it erupted at the same crater.

According to the Kagoshima District Meteorological Observatory, cinders flew 1,000 to 1,300 meters, but no pyroclastic flows occurred, and since the expansion of the mountain’s body, which had been confirmed since the evening of February 13, was resolved with this eruption, the eruption alert level 3 (mountain entry restrictions) will be maintained.
