The police shot the knife-wielding man outside his Yokohama apartment.

The police shot a 63-year-old man who had threatened them on Tuesday with a knife outside a Yokohama apartment.

Police said they got a call at about 7 a.m. Fuji TV announced on Tuesday that a suspicious man was lurking in a corridor on the third floor of an apartment building in Kohoku Ward. Four officers went to the building where the man who was brandishing a knife was approached.

He lunged at them when the police told him to drop the knife, cutting one of the officers across his left eye. The man was shot in the thigh by another soldier.

The police said the man was taken to the hospital, identified as Yoshifumi Ogawa, and treated for his wound, which doctors said was not life-threatening.

Police said that Ogawa will be accused of obstructing police officers in the line of duty and breaching the law on weapons and sword regulation.

No other information on why Ogawa was in the apartment building have been published.
