VP Robredo says she is ready to become President if Duterte declares revolutionary gov’t

As the current Vice President of the Philippines, Leni Robredo noted that she is ready to succeed President Rodrigo Duterte if he declares a revolutionary government. KAMI learned that it is part of the Office of the Vice President’s constitutional mandate to become the new president if the incumbent president declared a revolutionary government. “Lahat naman ng kumakandidatong Pangalawang Pangulo dapat ready sa ganyang eventuality kasi ‘yan naman ‘yung mandato ng opisina,” Robredo said, as reported by the Inquirer (author Patricia Ann Roxas)

As reported by the GMA News (author Llanescas Panti), an election lawyer and Robredo’s legal counsel, Romulo Macalintal, explained that if Duterte declares a revolutionary government, then Robredo will be the leader of the duly constituted government. “Declaring a revolutionary government would mean that President Duterte becomes the leader of a revolutionary government while Robredo becomes the leader as president of a duly constituted government,” he said. Macalintal added that such an act would test the loyalty of the Armed Forces of the Philippines on whether they would pledge their loyalty to Duterte’s revolutionary government or Robredo’s constitutionally existing government.

Rappler (author Pia Ranada) has reported earlier that President Duterte threatened to suspend the writ of habeas corpus and declare a “revolutionary war” as he slammed Sen. Franklin Drilon for saying that the administration should be careful of reviewing government contracts.
