CHEMICAL LEAK IN SHINKANSEN: Sulfuric & Nitric Acids
On October 9, chemicals leaked inside a Tohoku Shinkansen train running near Sendai Station, causing burns and other injuries to 11 passengers. The leaked chemicals were found to be “sulfuric acid” and “nitric acid”.
According to the police, the concentrations of sulfuric acid and nitric acid are unknown, but the containers containing the chemicals were pristine.
The man in his 40s who was carrying the chemicals is the president of a small geological survey company. The man said, “I brought the chemicals from a warehouse in Towada City, Aomori Prefecture, which I manage. The sulfuric acid and nitric acid are used to extract minerals.
