Presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio reminded senatorial candidate Imee Marcos that having a college degree is not a requirement to becoming a senator.
Duterte-Carpio made the comment after Marcos found herself in hot water for allegedly faking her college and law degrees, reported ABS-CBN News.
Duterte-Carpio, chairperson of regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago which Marcos is a part of, said that the daughter of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos is planning on releasing a statement about her educational background.
“Sabi niya maglalabas siya ng written official statement about the question on her educational background,” Duterte-Carpio told reporters on Tuesday at the sidelines of the HNP campaign rally in Antipolo City.
“Sinabi ko naman sa kanya, in any event, whatever it is, the law, our Constitution only requires for the president, vice-president, and senators to be able to read and write and she can very well do that given her track record as governor,” she added.
It can be recalled that Marcos claimed to be “one of the first female graduates from an Ivy League School—Princeton University, graduating with honors.”
However, The Daily Princetonian, the independent student paper of Princeton University, debunked Marcos’ claims saying that the senatorial candidate did not graduate from the said university.
Princeton Deputy University Spokesperson Michael Hotchkiss also said that Marcos only attended “from fall 1973 to spring 1976 and returned again for fall 1977 to spring 1979”.
Marcos also claimed that she graduated from the UP College of Law in 1983.
However, officials of the University of the Philippines said that they do not have record of Marcos graduating from the country’s premier university.
