NZ police start releasing bodies to relatives

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says authorities have started handing over the bodies of the victims of Friday’s attacks to their families.

Fifty people were shot dead at two mosques in Christchurch.

Police say the victims who have already been identified are aged between three and 77, and two of them were children.

More than 70 officials, including experts from other countries, are working to confirm their identities.

Police say they are mindful of the Islamic tradition of burying bodies as soon as possible after death, and they are working as quickly as they can.

Ardern told reporters on Sunday that the authorities hope to release all the remains by Wednesday.
