Chinese water cannons vs. Philippine ships
A spokesman for China’s National Maritime Police Bureau announced on April 6 that it had conducted a crackdown on four vessels in the South China Sea on May 5, including a Philippine Coast Guard vessel, because they “illegally trespassed into Chinese waters.
The Philippine side, on the other hand, clarified that the Chinese vessels had used water guns to obstruct navigation, and expressed “strong condemnation of the illegal act.
The scene was near the reef of Ayungin (Chinese name: Renai), which is effectively controlled by the Philippines. A spokesman for the China Coast Guard Bureau asserted that “China has undisputed sovereignty over the Nansha Islands, including Renai Reef,” and that it will continue to crack down on the area. According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the guard ship was escorting a vessel carrying food and other supplies to the Philippine military on Ayungin Reef.
