FILIPINOS’ TRUST IN JAPAN: Highest at 92%, while China considered “biggest threat”

The Philippine political consultancy Publicis Asia released the results of a poll that examined Filipinos’ level of trust in foreign countries and regional coalitions. Those who said they “trust” Japan topped the list at 92%. On the other hand, 79% cited China as the “biggest threat. The survey highlighted the distrust of China, which is increasing its maritime expansion in the South China Sea.

According to the survey results, 55% of respondents answered that they “very much trust” Japan, the single highest percentage among the 12 countries/regions mentioned in the question. The percentage of respondents who answered that they “trust Japan a great deal” rose to 92%, the highest among the 12 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), of which the Philippines is a member. Only 8% of respondents “do not trust Japan very much” and 1% “do not trust Japan at all,” indicating the pro-Japanese sentiment among Filipinos.
