Man detained for offering ¥100 million to anyone who kills mayor of Toyota City

Police arrested a 30-year-old man in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, after posting a message on a social networking site, promising 100 million yen to anyone who kills Toshihiko Ota, the 66-year-old mayor of the city.

Police say Shinya Yamauchi, a company employee who failed to run against Ota in the Toyota City mayoral race in February 2020, posted a picture of himself at around 1:30 a.m. standing on top of the stone gate of the mayor’s residence, carrying what appears to be a bladed knife of some kind. Fuji TV announced Saturday. A picture of a pile of cash was also included in the post.

Yamauchi offers 100 million yen in the post for anyone to kill the mayor, particularly someone who has suffered financially because of the coronavirus. An employee of the town government saw the post and police were informed.

Police said Yamauchi confessed to the charge and quoted him as saying that, after going to his office every day between Jan 25 and Jan 28, he was upset at being denied a meeting with the mayor. He also confessed that he didn’t have 100 million yen, the police said.
