Rei Kawakubo was one of the greatest inspiration for any promising designer. Thus, it is not surprising that Noir Kei Ninomiya will want to fill in Kawakubo’s shoes. Ninomiya was born in Japan and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium. He started his career in fashion designing at Comme des Garcons (French for “like boys”) as pattern maker. This line was founded by Kawakubo. In 2012, he was given the go signal to start his own label. He described his creation as something that is as grand as haute couture but uses only one color; black.

He experimented with black and merged it with unconventional patterns, cuttings and assembly techniques. For example, his biker jackets were deconstructed with very intricate, fine splicing and were injected with metal details. He reinvented the classic little black dress by layering it with strips of stain ribbons.
He proclaimed, “I really love black.” He is more interested in defying fashion conventions. For example, during a fashion show, he showed clothes with studs that replaced stitching and merged it with 3D technology, resulting to clothes with sparkling shades of color.
