United States – Decluttering guru Marie Kondo is “rescuing” families in the United States from a sea of unnecessary belongings with her unscripted show, and the sparks of joy are spreading to social media.
Many viewers of “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo,” by Netflix Inc., have “KonMari’ed” (tidied up) their own houses in the United States and posted images of their “new” homes online.
Over eight episodes, Kondo visits a wide variety of families, including a couple with two children, a just-married same-sex couple and a widow, all of whom are overwhelmed with clutter.
At the beginning of each episode, Kondo greets a house with her eyes closed while sitting on the floor. In the first phase of decluttering, Kondo has her client bring all their items out of closets and other storage areas and put them in one place.
She then asks them to check whether the items “spark joy,” allowing them to decide which are special and which need to go.
All of the featured families examine their lives through tidying up, which is probably one of the main factors in drawing such a big audience.
