Despite the heavy promotion, the latest film in the Star Wars saga, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, lost out in number of tickets sold to the latest movie of the Youkai Watch.
According to the latest in Japanese Box Office, The second Youkai Watch movie, Youkai Watch the Movie 2: King Enma and the Five stories, Nyan!, took in a total of 974,557 admissions in 434 screens for the past two-day weekend (December 19 and 20), or a total of JPY1.057 billion in total gros.
Meanwhile, Star Wars: The Force Awakens had only 800,258 admissions in 958 screens for the same weekend, but it outranks the anime film for overall ticket sales in the same weekend, generating JPY1.25 billion in total gross.
Youkai Watch is a popular role-playing (RPG) video game franchise, which was developed & published by Level-5. The franchise has launched multiple video games for the Nintendo 3DS, as well as manga and anime adaptations, which is being considered to be the biggest game franchise in Japan since the Pokémon game and media franchise.
Main characters:
- Komasan (コマさん) is a Pretty Class, Fire-attribute YouKai ranked D; he is an ice cream-loving Youkai from the countryside. According to the Yokai Daijiten (Youkai encyclopedia) it states, “A Koma dog that came from a rural area to an urban area. He freaks out saying “Monge~!” to express awe at the city.”
- Whisper (ウィスパー) Keita’s personal ghost butler and overall guide to the world of yokai. Keita befriended him upon inserting a coin into an old toy capsule machine he found in the forest.
- Jibanyan (ジバニャン) is a Pretty Class Cat YouKai. He is a Fire Attribute YouKai ranked D. According to the Japanese Youkai Daijiten (Youkai Dictionary) it states, “A cat that died when it got ran over by a car and reincarnated into a spirit. He constantly seeks revenge on the car that struck him yet when he tries to fight it, he always fails.”
- Keita Amano (天野景太) / Nathan Adams is the main protagonist of the Youkai Watch series. He possesses a Youkai Watch, which allows him to view, befriend, and summon Youkai.
