New Japan, Old Japan / CHAIRiots of fire

UnknownBy Ryuzo Sasaki / Yomiuri Shimbun PhotographerKURASHIKI, Okayama — A unique endurance race, the Isu-1 Grand Prix (Isu-1 GP), in which participants pushed through a shopping street riding on office chairs with casters, was held on May 9 in Kurashiki. Participants raced against the clock on the Tokiwacho shopping street in the city’s Mizushima district.

[sociallocker]The race began in 2010 in the Kirara shopping street in Kyotanabe, Kyoto Prefecture. Using office chairs that are familiar in people’s daily lives and can be easily prepared, the event was held to inject new life into a shopping street where a large number of stores had been shuttered.

The event has been held in the original shopping street once a year, and races endorsed by the organizing association of the Isu-1 GP have also been held in Yamagata, Tokushima and Nagasaki prefectures.
